Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Micaela Hartling, Owner of Saltwater Wellness, located in Eastern Passage, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a small Wellness Clinic offering massage therapy services in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia. My business began in 2020 with me as the sole health provider. Since then, I have invited another RMT to work alongside me. We have grown to offer a large variety of treatment techniques, such as Cupping, Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release, and more, to tailor each treatment specific to our client's needs.

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in the community I now work in. Eastern Passage has, and always will be, home to me. I graduated from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in 2019 and was lucky enough to have a job offer prior to graduation, close to home at the Eastern Passage Wellness Center. With the closing of that clinic in July of 2020, I began to search for a new opportunity within the community, and I found the unit I am in today, and my business began in August of 2020.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Finding the courage to take the leap. Many dreams of starting a small business, and for myself, it was something I saw happening much further into my career… “but why not now?”. I was only 24 at the time, and with lots of help and encouragement from family and friends, a dream quickly became a reality.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time management! I am so fortunate to work in a position that gives me the opportunity to create a flexible schedule for myself. But with running a new business, there are many new responsibilities, and trying to find a balance in your practice as well as your paperwork can be challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Saying no is okay! Boundaries are very important; know your limits.
  2. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s a learning experience. Take it one day at a time, and be patient with yourself.
  3. Acknowledge when you need help. You will want to do everything yourself, but take pride in asking for help when you need it.
