Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Victoria McCutcheon, Founder of Salon Tori Did That, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a salon owner/stylist that focuses exclusively on curly hair! I provide a unique luxury hair experience that helps people embrace and care for their natural hair patterns. I strive to provide a space haven for people at different points in their natural hair journey.

Tell us about yourself

What motivated me to start my business was the lack of curly hair specialists I could entrust to do my own hair. I realized there is an overlooked market that deserved attention, and I became motivated to help serve and empower that market.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment thus far is finishing my first year of business successfully and with a growing demand! I’ve also been featured on channel six news, channel 17 news, fox 29, WHYY, Phillymag, and Be well Philly, among a host of magazines!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

At this time, I think the hardest part of being a business owner is trying to meet the demand. I’m so grateful to have the demand, but It’s currently just me in my boutique salon, so there is limited availability. I do plan to open a bigger space in the future!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know who your target audience is. This will help you streamline your services.
  2. Have realistic expectations. Try not to only think of the big goal. Take it one step at a time. This will help build a solid foundation for your business.
  3. Be passionate about the work you do; it’ll show in the work you put out.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don’t overthink it! You don’t have to know everything when you first start, but you have to start. You’ll figure it out along the way!
