Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Salimah Scott, Owner of Urban GLŌ, located in Union, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Urban GLŌ is a company that focuses on encouraging people to carve out their well-deserved ME TIME through our homemade candles and other home decor items. There is no way to enjoy self-care time if you are constantly on the move. We are telling you to simply STOP and smell the roses! Prioritize self-care and self-love at every stage in life. Urban GLŌ started out with three homemade candles upon our website launch in April 2020. There are now over 12 candle fragrances to choose from within our various collections. Our customers are working professionals, moms, and simply people who love candles!

Tell us about yourself

I'm a mom of two from Jersey City, NJ, that LOVES to be creative, hence the birth of Urban GLŌ. I was going through a tough time in my life and really needed an outlet. So I would sit in my backyard most nights and just light candles and listen to music. It got to the point where I literally burned every candle I owned, so I started creating my own candles!

I am extremely hands-on with Urban GLŌ, and everything within creating our candles begins and ends with me. From creating the label design to mixing the fragrances together to pouring the wax into our jars to the website design and maintenance, product photography, packing & shipping orders, EVERYTHING! My kids motivate me to aspire higher every day. I love that they are proud to tell anyone about their mom's business! It has been such a pleasure to create something that can bring warmth to any space. Urban GLŌ is literally peace in a jar for me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Since launching in April 2020, I have made an appearance on a nationally syndicated radio show - The Jeff Foxx Show. Also, I regularly pop up at West Elm, showcasing my products to their customers. My company is also set to appear as an extra on an Amazon film. The biggest accomplishment of all is building a connection with countless people who truly love my candles and continuously support me. I have shipped my products to customers nationwide.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Maintaining the balance between home life and business life can be a bit challenging at times. Thankfully, I have a family that is understanding of my desire to grow my business and supports me in any way they can.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be Consistent.
  2. Always be teachable. Whether it means seeking a mentor, gaining financial literacy, connect with other business owners.
  3. Do what feels good for your soul and always move with that, not with what's popular or on-trend. That is when your most authentic business efforts will come to light.
