Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Altiere-Cohen, Owner of Sadie Baby Sweets, located in Columbus, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sadie Baby Sweets is a full-service dessert catering company, and we provide dessert table styling and set up too. We specialize in beautifully crafted customized mini desserts. We celebrate life’s sweetest moments for corporations, weddings, bridal and baby showers, birthday parties, graduations, and bar & bat mitzvahs, just to make a few. Our core client ranges from 25 years old to 55.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve always dreamed of being an entrepreneur, and it runs in my family! 10 years ago, I moved back to Ohio from NYC to be closer to my family. I was working as a realtor and didn’t have many friends in Columbus at the time. I started baking at night and brought my creations into the office the next day. My coworkers encouraged me to pursue selling my sweets. Real estate wasn’t really a passion of mine, so I thought I would jump into this next adventure, and that’s where Sadie Baby Sweets was born.

The name comes from my beloved Weimaraner Sadie, or as we called her, “Sadie Baby,” and also a play on words of the individually portioned mini sweets we make, “Baby Sweets”… Sadie Baby Sweets. I love that every day with my business is different and exciting. I am learning and growing with every decision that I make, which makes me stronger. It isn’t always the easiest to navigate new waters, but with the support of my husband Ryan and my family, I know I can be resilient. My daughters, Reagan, 4, and Remington, 3, love going to my bakery… it's like a giant candy land playhouse to them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been to survive and thrive during the trying times of Covid. We learned how to be flexible and pivot to the need of our customers.

What sets us apart from the rest is our attention to detail and superior customer service. We are so grateful for the continued support of our local community and our fantastic clientele. We are constantly strategizing and looking for ways to be better and grow. We are so honored and thankful to be a small part of so many wonderful celebrations.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest challenges that come with being a business owner are finding great staff members and finding a good work/life balance. I know I am not alone in this, as I feel this is what many businesses and owners look to find.

I have learned so many things over the last few years that I have been on this journey. I now truly understand the importance of accepting and embracing change while learning that spending time with the people you care about trumps all.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The three tips that I would recommend for anyone looking to start a business are to be resilient, have a mentor and loving support system in place, and surround yourself with great staff to help you run and grow your business!
