Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ailson Cruise, Owner of Sadhana Yoga Studio, located in Burlington, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sadhana Yoga studio is a boutique Hot Yoga Studio in Burlington. We specialize in offering individualized attention to practitioners of all levels.

Tell us about yourself

I started attending hot yoga classes about ten years ago and was immediately captivated by the benefits of this ancient practice. I became certified to teach and also started managing the studio I was teaching at. When the opportunity presented itself in 2020, I opened Sadhana Yoga Studio. We offer classes in-studio, online, and in the park in the summer! We also run regular workshops, and each year we host a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Keeping the business afloat throughout the pandemic is my biggest accomplishment! We pivoted to online when facilities had to close, and we worked hard to maintain our customer base and continue to build it as things reopened. It took a while, but we are now busier and more successful than pre-COVID.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner/solopreneur, there are many aspects that I am solely in charge of, from managing the finances to social media to daily maintenance, marketing, as well as teaching and managing the studio. So I would say the hardest thing is trying to find the balance of working in the business while also working on the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You don't know what you don't know - so do your research and ask questions!
  2. Show up and be present - your energy and presence in the business (physically and online) will help to grow your client base and develop relationships with your clients.
  3. Manage your time - schedule your daily/weekly/monthly tasks, so they don't get forgotten about or missed.
