Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brett Robillard, CEO and Co-Founder of Saddl Racing Inc., located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SADDL is an app that provides fitness enthusiasts with a truly gamified exercise experience. Users wager and compete on their stationary exercise bike in an immersive on-screen racing environment. Move your rider via Apple Watch biometrics and race to the finish line for the top cash prize!

Tell us about yourself

Throughout my life, I've always searched for alternative fitness methods with one goal in mind: what will provide me with the greatest motivation? Every experiment came back to one model...competition and rewards. SADDL injects the workout with a competitive spirit and brings the absolute best effort out of its users. One of my greatest motivators to launch this app is so I can use it myself!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every stage, from conception to prototype to minimum-viable product, can be viewed as an accomplishment. Getting the SADDL prototype into the hands of early testers felt like a great achievement while providing me with significant product validation.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner requires a certain degree of resiliency. Failure in some shape or form is inevitable, and being able to use that failure to help move your company forward is imperative.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. In the early days, be sure to take the opinions of friends and family with a grain of salt. They aren't necessarily your target market, and it's easy to be steered in the wrong direction!
  2. Get your idea or product into the hands of your target audience asap, regardless of completion level.
  3. Surround yourself with people smarter or more experienced than you!
