Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lola Manekin, Owner of Sacred Owl Retreat House, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a medicine woman in a quantum, a multidimensional dance rooted in the body and linked to all that is. The language of my love is creating sacred spaces and transformational experiences for people to truly heal and integrate through the body to become the fullness of who they came here to be.

Movement is the medicine I serve through many soul technologies, which include breathwork, sensory awareness, somatic practices, Chinese medicine, bioenergetic medicine, animal medicine, and plant medicine. All are individually tailored to each person's specific needs.

My clients are humans who are not sleepwalking on earth. I call in those fully committed to the evolution of their souls, willing to be pushed beyond comfort and go deep into what it means to claim their full potential as human beings, both in and through this body.

Tell us about yourself

I was raised by incredibly wise parents who have chosen our doctors to be holistic. Since I was born, Instead of pharmaceuticals, I was treated with homeopathy and acupuncture. That led me to study Integrative Medicine at College in Brazil, where I studied infinite healing therapies and received my Masters's Degree in Chinese Medicine in the USA. My toolbox continued to grow as I found unique teachers to initiate me in other healing modalities that were a compliment to everything I was doing.

For a while, I decided to put aside this version of myself to open Movement Lab in Baltimore. It was only after moving back to my island in Brazil during the pandemic for almost two years and reconnecting to the land that knows my DNA that I was led back to powerfully reactive my healing skills. What motivates me is to witness people diving into some extremely uncomfortable healing journeys and coming out on the other side, remembering who they truly are.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I used to be a "go-getter," wanting to force things to happen and leading my business from a complete Alpha/masculine state. Now all I do is stay quiet enough so I can hear the guidance that comes from my heart and allow things to happen as they should, in their own time. It was a potent change.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I will plug into my previous answer and say that trusting the process is not an easy thing to do. I often find myself trying to speed up the process, and it causes me some unnecessary suffering. Another thing I am working on constantly is value and worth. Putting a price on an offer that I know is actually priceless, and sticking to it no matter what people say has been a huge practice for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take time each day to reset yourself and your energy. A tired mind/body/emotion cannot be in true service.
  2. Be clear on what you love about this work and why you started it to begin with. Write it down and put it in a place where you can see it… especially on hard days.
  3. Ask for help. You don't have to do it all yourself.
