Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sydney Sloan & Caleb Schoeppe, owners of Sacred Hollow Farm, located in Lowell, AR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a sustainable and organic u-pick wildflower farm located in the heart of NWA. We provide a beautiful flower farm open to the public to come to pick flowers and create stunning bouquets of fresh flowers to take home. In addition to flowers, we also have a small retail store on-site filled with art, jewelry, teas, woodwork, and more, all handmade by us on the farm.

Our customers are anyone and everyone! We want our business to be a place where everyone is welcome to enjoy the open air of nature and be able to take a little bit of that home with them.

Tell us about yourself

Like many people during the pandemic, we were forced into our homes. One of us lost our job completely while the other worked from the kitchen table. With this extra time spent at home, it allowed for some deep reflection on what we were doing and realizing we were not truly happy or fulfilled in our careers. After many late-night talks and brainstorm sessions, we settled on what would ultimately become Sacred Hollow Farm. We are both artists and creators with a huge love for the outdoors and nature. We finally came to the conclusion we needed to create a space where we could share our art and provide an outdoor experience to the public.

Freedom to do what you want each and every day is a huge personal motivator. But the biggest joy is to watch people's faces light up when they are in the fields picking flowers. That alone is worth all the hard work that goes on a farm.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking the plunge! In our humble opinion, it is "easy" to start a business. The hardest part and often most scary is making that decision to jump and go for it. Once you get past that fear barrier to go for your dreams, it is amazing. So for us, our biggest accomplishment was going for it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For us, specifically being an agriculture business, nature is our biggest hurdle. Not knowing day to day or week to week what to expect from mother nature can be nerve-wracking. We had to learn very quickly to pivot and react to natural curveballs. And taxes!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't let fear hold you back! Go for it and make your dream happen. Take the fear out of it, and you can do amazing things in your life and career as a business owner.
  2. Research and get market feedback. Don't be afraid to reach out to others in your industry and get feedback.
  3. Market! You have to get your name out there.
