Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ryan Stewart, managing partner of WEBRIS Agency, located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

WEBRIS is a digital agency that helps clients get more traffic, leads, and customers through online marketing campaigns. We specialize in helping law firms in competitive markets get new cases through organic and paid search engine marketing.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the marketing space for almost 15 years. I got my start working for a large consulting firm but quickly realized that was not the path for me. So I started looking for alternative ways to support myself, and I stumbled across "Search Engine Optimization." I began consuming everything I could about the topic and soon started building my own websites and trying to rank them organically in Google. Over time, I got really good. So good that businesses began offering me money to help them do the same. Ever since then, I've been working directly with businesses to help them get more customers online. I genuinely love the competition and how much the industry has changed. It forces you to stay hyper-present and continue to learn, grow and evolve.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I sold my first agency after two years in operation. It was massive validation for me because when I first started the business, not a lot of people supported me. At that time, most people didn't understand what I was doing or see the real value. Selling that business didn't set me up for life financially, but it did give me the confidence to know I was on the right track.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Managing people. Whether that's staff or clients, people are the wildcard. People are also the biggest reason for your success, so understanding how to work and manage people is the biggest daily challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start yesterday. The world is changing so fast. The longer you wait, the harder it is going to get.
  2. If you don't know what you want to do, try a lot of things.
  3. You don't have to quit your job or lose your income to start a business. You just have to START the business and find the time.
