Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ryan Kinloch, Founder of Blooming Flower, located in Gaithersburg, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I make and sell handcrafted soap and skin care products using simple, quality ingredients. My customers are typically women over the age of 30.

Tell us about yourself

I actually started on working on my business when I was unemployed. I was interested in natural hair and skincare products, but I couldn't seem to find quality products at a reasonable price. My degrees are in chemistry, so I just decided that I would try making my own. I'm motivated by the desire to provide quality products with easy-to-understand ingredients at reasonable prices- affordable luxury.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I honestly don't feel like I have achieved a major accomplishment yet. Just developing the products and forming the business has been an accomplishment so far- I'm still working on the "big" accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me has been finding the time to get everything done. I actually work a full-time job in addition to running my business, so it never feels like there are enough hours in the day to accomplish tasks/goals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay focused on the mission/vision of the business and try to remember what inspired you to start it.
  2. Don't give up. Business owners will face challenges, so sometimes, you have to think outside of the box or get creative to overcome the challenges.
  3. Find a way to have fun while running your business.
