Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ryan Elwood, a drummer and drum instructor based out of Denver, Co, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a drummer and drum instructor. I perform and record with artists and bands all over the country and mentor up-and-coming drummers from my studio in Denver, Colorado.

Tell us about yourself

I started drumming when I was 9-years-old. My father is also a drummer, and he was my first teacher. I started filling in for him as I got older and eventually got connected with a few bands on my own. I've been drumming professionally ever since.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I remember feeling very accomplished when I was able to leave my retail job and focus 100% on my business. I am so grateful that I can provide for my family while still doing what I love.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a creative person, it can be hard to focus on the more mundane aspects of keeping a business afloat. I've known several musicians whose careers never got off the ground because they put all their effort into refining their talents but didn't find a way to monetize those skills.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Master your instrument. If you're a great musician, you will attract other great musicians. Be in a constant state of improvement.
  2. Find your people. Music is a very personal expression, so find other musicians who are of a like mind.
  3. Be flexible and diversify. Expand the areas where your skills can be of service (i.e., live concerts, studio recording, teaching lessons). Be ready and willing to work with anybody, and be flexible enough to go with the flow without sacrificing your musical identity and personality.
