Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Wear Robinson, Founder of RWR Consultants, Inc., located in La Grange, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach activists to be more effective. Individuals, nonprofits, corporations - any entity looking to change the world.

Tell us about yourself

I leverage my professional and academic experiences to help my clients fast-track to success. Having launched nonprofits and for-profit entities myself and consulted for for-profit, nonprofit, and NGOs around the world, I've seen it, done it, made the mistakes, and ultimately fixed the problems. Fast-tracking activists to create positive change in the world by integrating business and social marketing disciplines is my jet fuel.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

On paper, being the only person not representing a major organization tasked with developing the first U.S. National Water Safety Action Plan would make me an obvious 'biggest accomplishment,' but my greatest pride comes from changing people and approaches, seeing their pride. This manifested in coaching a small organization in Uganda on how to build partnerships across government entities and working with a start-up nonprofit to develop a sustainable funding flow by implementing business disciplines creatively.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You have to believe in yourself and the value you provide deeply, but always be open to criticism, observations, and opportunities the change and grow. Simply believing leads to arrogance and imposing ideas. Never listening to others kills creative solutions that are right for each client.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's a business. Money matters, so set a budget from the beginning.
  2. Market your ideas. Not just your product. Not assuming that if you build it, they will come. And remember, marketing is different from selling. Marketing is a seduction.
  3. Have a best friend and a dog because some days you'll need that unconditional support.
