Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Suzy Vo, Director of Rush Salon, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a hair salon that has been located in the heart of Vancouver, BC, for the last 6.5 years. Our customers are people who contribute to their communities! So much of society nowadays relies on good citizens to function. We truly appreciate our customers.

Tell us about yourself

What got us started on our business was that we wanted to create our own culture and have the freedom to be expressive in our work & within ourselves but also be able to share that with our clients without having to conform to the Corporate protocol.

What motivates us each day is being around passionate people. They are always contagious for me, and they get my energy going. And they come from all walks of life, not just famous artists or musicians.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel our greatest accomplishment as a business owner is the fact that we doubled our core team and so far have managed to hire and retain great talent while keeping our core values consistent. Hiring is a tremendous challenge. While we still have a lot of work to do, I am extremely proud of the team we have managed to build and feel confident that it sets us up for further success in 2023.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things you'll have to face as a business owner is dealing with the unknowns. And let me tell you, I've encountered many unknowns! Every day there will be new challenges and obstacles to deal with. Business is never predictable, no matter how prepared you are.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Begin with a detailed plan. This one is a must. Have targets, missions, measurable goals, and deadlines for each milestone along the way.
  2. Get out there and network. Once you've established your work. What happens after is to create your own word of mouth. Be your own brand ambassador and show why people should give you a chance.
  3. Surround yourself with the right people. The right mentors and strategic partners aren't the only people with whom you'll need to align. Surrounding yourself with a great team is equally important. Build your staff with smart, talented, and driven employees who share your vision and foster a healthy environment.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As you grow in business and hit a new milestone, never forget where you came from. That keeps the authenticity of your business, clients, and team.
