What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a journalist, copywriter, and author for a number of consumer and trade media outlets and other clients, including in the higher-ed, veterinary, pet, and small business spaces.
Tell us about yourself
I think I was born a writer. I started reading early. I have always enjoyed writing. I feel lucky that I've made a lifelong career as a writer and editor. For about 10 years, I worked on staff at several places before a longtime mentor encouraged me to strike out on my own. My motivation comes from the opportunities to connect with smart, interesting people and help share their stories.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Making it work for 20+ years and being able to live my life and use my time in ways that make sense for me. I enjoy making new connections and value the relationships I've built.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, it's the whole health insurance situation, retirement planning, and then, of course, taxes and such. My longtime CPA retired a couple of years ago, so that's been an adjustment. After a couple of false starts with others, I'm hopeful the one I found recently can be my new go-to.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Buy all the tech and other major capital expenses you need before you quit your job-job.
- The people you currently know may only provide enough contacts and growth for your first year, so keep connecting with new people and building relationships.
- Focus on personal and professional development (with the help of a coach, if you can) and build the kind of life you want.
