Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jane Heur, founder of ROSERAY, located in Buena Park, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Roseray launched with the vision of making a kind difference in the world through beauty & lifestyle. We believe true beauty is in the way we live and the actions we take (no matter how "small"). So after thorough research and testing, we started partnering with brands that aligned with our vision to bring earth & ingredient-conscious beauty products to our community without sacrificing quality. We were then able to expand into our lifestyle products, which include our laundry detergent tablets and 100% wool dryer balls.

Each decision we make is not taken lightly. One of the main questions we always ask ourselves is, "will it make a difference? If so, how?" We do our best to partner with companies that also strive to make a positive impact in the world. As an example, our 100% wool dryer balls are all hand-made in Nepal by a company that aims to create economic opportunities for marginalized and underprivileged communities.

Tell us about yourself

Before I started Roseray, I had worked for a few beauty companies, from start-ups to even one of the largest beauty companies in Korea, and ultimately fell in love with the industry. At the same time, I also dealt with a very unhealthy relationship with beauty standards, which I think many can relate to. So, when I launched Roseray, I wanted to take beauty and create a space that emphasized how true beauty is in the heart & in the actions we take (as cliche as it sounds). Every single action creates ripples and can make a kind difference. How beautiful is that?

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Probably getting myself actually to launch the business. It's easy visualizing and dreaming of becoming a business owner, but taking those thoughts and actually taking action can be hard. There's a lot of fear that can get in the way, but you really have to believe in yourself!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balance & consistency. As a small business, I'm wearing multiple hats - research, sourcing, finances, website management, sales, marketing, graphics/videos, etc. It's a lot! So finding that right balance so that I don't get burnt out is difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small. The beginning is where you'll be testing things out to see what works and what doesn't. I really wish I had someone to tell me this when I first launched- but it's ok to not have it altogether at the beginning, just like you wouldn't expect a 0-1-year-old to be perfect! Learn, and let your company grow.
  2. Remember your vision. It's so easy to get lost and discouraged when running your business. I have my vision written down, so when this happens, I look back and remind myself why I started this business.
  3. Learn to rest & don't give up. I don't know why we have this negative view of rest sometimes, but it's totally necessary! When you feel like giving up, give yourself a little break because sometimes that's just what we need.
