Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenifer Eaton, Owner and Co-Founder of Rooted in Play, located in Huntington Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a small private practice that utilizes the principles of applied behavior analysis to treat families with children diagnosed with autism and related disorders.

Tell us about yourself

I was sitting in my business class at CSULB, and I realized it was quickly not for me! I ended up taking a psychology class, and I fell in love! Later on, I became a nanny for a family with a child with autism. I remember seeing the ABA company come in, and I was fascinated by the changes I saw, and quickly! I later had exposure to the UCLA autism program, which grew my interest even more. I have been amazed by the field ever since. Seeing families overcome obstacles to help support more peace and happiness in their homes is an honor. I look at every day as another opportunity to help shape the family dynamic and foster relationships.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting out as a small business of 2 employees and growing to double digits! Not only do we have the honor of helping others in the field become the best versions of themselves, but we have also built strong relationships with the families that we serve. There is an equal amount of trust and respect. All of which had to be earned.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Well, I didn’t study business! So, shifting my approach to be more of a business owner while simultaneously helping so many families in need has been a challenge. A challenge I wouldn’t change for the world!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Don’t give up! Keep going. Find your passion, and don’t let anything get in the way. Acknowledge there will be great days and there will be very hard days. It comes with the territory. Give yourself some grace; you are doing what you love, and that matters.
