Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Crews, Founder of Root Chews, LLC, located in Graham, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We make truly all-natural mints out of little squares of dried parsley root tossed in peppermint essential oil. They are very minty and sweetener-free. Our customers are "mint mongrels" who love peppermint but don't like chemicals, sweeteners, or other junk ingredients in their food.

Tell us about yourself

I originally thought of the idea after enjoying tea-tree toothpicks (that also have other essential oils soaked into them). I'd chew them up to get all the flavor out but then would end up with splintered wood bits in my mouth. I thought, "how can I get a similar essential oil delivery from something edible..." ...so I tried all kinds of roots of plants and eventually landed on parsley root because it's the blandest vegetable ever. It's like a flavorless white carrot. The neutral flavor of the parsley root doesn't mess with the peppermint flavor, so it was a total win.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is having a business that supports me and allows me to be my own boss and make my own hours. It's not exactly "financial freedom," but within the time vs. money dichotomy, I get a very nice taste of freedom.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Not having anyone to "crack the whip" ...I'd say not having anyone to be accountable to ..although I do feel accountable to my customers, serving them on time, etc... so that balances this issue out nicely.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you're selling goods, don't be afraid to leverage marketplace platforms like Etsy & Amazon with built-in audiences & marketing tech.
  2. Set aside more than enough money every month to pay your taxes so that when it's time to pay, it's easy, and any leftover money is like getting a "return."
  3. Don't be afraid to outsource, outsource, outsource.
