Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Romy Leonard, owner of Romy Leonard Coaching, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a confidence, visibility & self-esteem coach for entrepreneurs & leaders. My modalities are NLP + Mindfulness. We infuse those into your business for a beautiful blend of mindfulness and excellent practices. I am also an assistant coach for an NLP Coaching certification called Mind Surgery Method.

The reason why my clients love working with me is that we work holistically by identifying the root cause of self-sabotage or upper limits and address all those limiting beliefs (like 'I'm not smart enough'), overloaded emotions (like insecurities), and unuseful habits (like watching too much TV or hitting the snooze button). We get really specific to each person, and the results are incredible.

Tell us about yourself

My first business, KITH + KIN Tea, was created because I wanted to design my lifestyle after working in fine dining for over a decade. People began asking me to help them create a similar concept and to help them do it, which led me to discover NLP. I was already a mindfulness teacher, and I decided to marry those two into my personal modality, a practice of excellence and self-grace. I currently live in Chicago, and I love being able to work with my clients worldwide. I have clients in the UK, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Germany, Puerto Rico, and Switzerland, to name a few.

I really love what I do, and I love helping people. I truly believe that there are better ways to do things and better ways to do business and achieve things without the mindset of grinding and suffering that we are taught. That is what keeps me doing this every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I could say being featured in high-profile publications or multiplying my income, or having clients worldwide, but my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is my clients' results. Seeing the things they have done and achieved is my biggest joy as a coach because I pride myself on being someone whose clients REALLY SEE the results in their lives. Second to that is my personal mindset's growth and transformation.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Everyone has their kryptonite, whether it is a lack of consistency, fear of visibility, low self-esteem, or any other story. Understanding their own story and what makes business difficult for them is the key to turning things around for my clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start: Inspiration is cheap and elusive. Don't wait to be hit by the inspiration fairy before you do the work. Vision is expensive (you have to show up for it every day), but it is stable and lasting.
  2. Run: Focus on your zone of genius and money-making activities and delegate/automate the rest.
  3. Grow: You will have the same fears and insecurities at $1K months as you will at $10K months - if you want to break through glass ceilings, you will need to address these. No amount of strategy will get rid of them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

When I am not hyper-curating my home for ultimate hygge, I am probably having a conversation with my cat, Maxine. I love vacations where I transform into a different person or getaways that transport me to another place and time. I have lived in four different countries and nine cities, including NYC, Vegas, and Palm Springs. I love vintage finds, classic literature, sleep, quality time with friends & family, tea, LPs, comfortable pants, a good sense of humor, a good playlist & environmental advocacy.
