Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Romana Lai, Founder of Romana Makeup New York, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business provides hair and makeup services for special occasions, weddings, private events, photoshoots, and runway shows. My customers are from all over the world.

Tell us about yourself

I was born in Taiwan and raised all around the globe. I have years of professional experience working as a major editorial makeup artist contributing to publications like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, ad campaigns for Hugo Boss, Bebe, and backstage lead makeup artist at fashion shows such as French Connection, FCUK, Burnett New York and numerous designers for New York Fashion Week.

I left Taiwan, my home country, at the young age of 20 to study hair and makeup in Japan and started working right after completing my studies in Japan. I started traveling to different countries for work purposes, eventually leading me to New York.

I love making people feel good and happy, and makeup very well does that. I discovered the power of makeup and the happiness it creates when I started to practice on my younger sister and mother. Using the face of people as a canvas, I found the power to create change and amazing art; since then, I have been hooked.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing the big smile on my client's faces after I do their makeup and being part of their happiness.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The pandemic was very challenging for the small business paying so much expensive and significantly less return. I hope the situation will improve and life will return to normal soon.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient and grow your business one step at a time.
  2. Never be afraid to experiment and make the decisions.
  3. Be kind to people around you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Your most enemy is yourself - no one else.
