Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in performing arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Juliette Roberts, instructor, and owner of Roberts Academy of Dance, located in Charlottetown, PE, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Roberts Academy of Dance is an inclusive dance studio, offering multiple styles of dance for all ages! We put a huge emphasis on building our students' technical dance skills and their confidence, working and being a team, and having so much fun! At RAD, we are family. We want each other to succeed, and we want to be the best versions of ourselves possible. There will be ups, and there will be downs, but we know the people we surround ourselves with at RAD support us through it all. At RAD, we value every student that walks through our doors.

Tell us about yourself

I knew I always wanted to create a space for dancers to feel powerful, respected, and important. I wanted to provide dancers on PE a space where they know they belong, where they can learn how to grow as not only individuals but as a team. Having a space where individuals of all ages can come, feel welcomed, and feel empowered while working on building on their talents is truly special.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Moving into our own space!! RAD has always had an amazing vibe but now that students have a space they can call their second home, it's truly made every class that much more special. Our students are the core of RAD, and for them to have their own studio space it's just so cool.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Definitely setting boundaries. Boundaries as in, when you are working and when you are not working and making sure your clients know that you are not always available. Taking time for yourself is essential in running a successful business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be the leader you'd want to look up to.
  2. Have people in your corner that support you through everything.
  3. Set time aside weekly to do something unrelated to your business.
