Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music & entertainment but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert Wu, Founder of Robert Wu's Music Studio, located in Vancouver, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Robert Wu's Music Studio offers private piano and music theory lessons, either in-person at my studio (equipped with an upright and grand piano!) or online. I have taught students ranging from age 5 to 80 years old, from beginners to advanced students.

Although most of my students prefer learning Classical repertoires, I have also taught different genres, such as pop, hymns, and jazz.

Tell us about yourself

I started learning piano at the age of 11. My curriculum mainly consisted of Classical repertoires. Throughout my high-school years, I followed the Royal Conservatory of Music syllabus. I took numerous piano and music theory exams.

I began teaching piano while pursuing my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of British Columbia. During my final year at UBC, I decided to pursue a post-graduate degree to broaden my musical perspective and refine my performance and teaching skills.

I currently hold a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. Aside from running my music studio for my neighborhood, I also teach piano and music theory at another music academy and community center.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Seeing my students develop a passion for the instrument and make music a part of something they enjoy in their lives.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The business aspect, such as advertising and managing finances, was extremely challenging, especially when I first began. The post-secondary music programs rarely discuss the business aspect of teaching.

As a result, many students will either need to take some business courses on their own or do some extensive research. It can be very time-consuming and stressful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't stop learning! It is one of the best ways to stay self-motivated.
  2. Stay connected and keep building relationships with your neighborhood.
  3. Make sure to include some time for family and rest!
