Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rob Wherrett, Founder of Rob Wherrett Coaching, located in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide coaching and mentoring to leaders of medium-sized SMEs who are looking for help in planning and managing significant business transformations. Things that they never normally do - not Business As Usual. They see us as a specialist driving instructor who helps them navigate in difficult unfamiliar and under really difficult conditions. Using a wealth of tools and techniques, we can help those businesses get results way better than the average. (Typically, only 25% of major change projects succeed - we help clients hit 80%.)

Tell us about yourself

I have a background in very successful project management, coupled with world-class expertise in bringing creativity into the workplace. Additionally, I also know how to develop programme governance structures that work in businesses that are not used to project bureaucracy. I also taught the Management of Creativity Innovation and Change in an MBA programme for 16 years - dealing with people from all over the world. I really enjoy helping business leaders get to grips with managing change and developing their dreams and aspirations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Planning and leading the turn-round for an FTSE-100 Retailer that led to a trade sale and protected the jobs of thousands of staff. It started from a blank sheet of paper and delivered massive positive results.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Getting other business leaders to admit they need help. The idea that the boss knows everything is a huge mistake - yet so many people believe it to be true and won't challenge what they are being asked to do. I find it can be really difficult to get the mindset of others to accept that and take responsibility.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to ask for help - you often don't even know what you don't know.
  2. Set out a very clear destination of where you want to be and why and then plan BACKWARDS from that to the present. That way, you are aiming for certainty, not a vague hope.
  3. If you think you know what the problem is - then think again. Dissect it rigorously until you are crystal clear. Whatever your first thoughts were, they are almost certainly wrong.
