Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in retail but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rob Marsh, COO of Pyramid Foods, located in Nixa, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an employee-owned supermarket chain with 37 locations across Missouri and Kansas.

Tell us about yourself

I first got started in this industry at the age of 15; my only initial job was to unload watermelon trucks by hand every summer. My older brother was a produce manager at the time. I saw this industry as a vehicle that, if you work hard, is an industry you can grow. I didn't have the means at the time to attend or get a college education. My passion is to help train and lead those same individuals that are looking for the same.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been recognized several times for my leadership, dedication, and hard work. My proudest accomplishment was being named by Supermarket News as one of the nation's rising leaders in the industry. I was also recently nominated to the board of directors for the National Grocers Association.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The work/life balance, this industry is very competitive and very demanding if you want to strive to be the best.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Work hard, be patient, be loyal, and all of it will be recognized. There are so many individuals today that don't stick it out as they want instant gratification.
