Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ryley Milne, Owner of RM Tutoring, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

RM Tutoring is a small but growing tutor company based out of Calgary and Edmonton, but tutoring across Canada.

Tell us about yourself

My mother is a teacher. My father is an engineer. I initially followed in my father's footsteps by getting my B.Sc. Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta, but as it turns out, I am more of a teacher than an engineer. I had been tutoring on and off for years, always enjoying it. A few years ago, between jobs, I began tutoring again.

Over the years, I have learned teaching techniques that have proven to be very effective in helping students learn. Applying these techniques, the clients grew, and word spread, eventually turning RM Tutoring into what it is today. Aside from teaching, I keep busy with essentially any and all sports, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, I would say my biggest accomplishment is providing a service that helps students understand concepts in an effective matter and help them relieve the stress and frustration that can come with school.

Throughout my schooling, I had tutors who helped answer questions but didn't help me fully understand the process of the problem. RM Tutoring focuses on helping students comprehend the underlying concept of a question. We focus on the 'Why' and not just the 'How.' This, coupled with other proven teaching techniques, helps our students learn in the best way possible.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

At times owning a business can be overwhelming. It's shocking how many different aspects of running a business there are. I do my best to manage everything, always keeping quality education as my primary focus, but it is not always easy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate. As I mentioned above, owning a business can be overwhelming and stressful. If I wasn't passionate about what I was doing, it would have been very easy to throw in the towel.
  2. Start slow. There is so much to do when building a business from scratch. If you try to build fast, your overall product/service will suffer.
  3. Provide Quality Service. The reason RM Tutoring has grown to where it is today is because of quality service. It has always been priority number 1. Provide a quality service, don't take shortcuts, and the company will grow organically.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As cheesy as it sounds, ever since I started RM Tutoring, it hasn't felt like work. It has been such a rewarding experience, and I have learned so much along the way.
