Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lyn Larson, owner of Ritual Hair Design, located in Hillsboro, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Ritual Hair Design, a locally owned beauty salon recognized in the Hillsboro and Beaverton, Oregon areas as a high-end, full-service hair salon since 2001. We specialize in innovative hair color techniques cutting styles and are known for our commitment to long-lasting connections with our clients, as well as developing new relationships with each new client. Our loyal clients are members of our community, and we serve people here that are part of the local headquarters of Nike, Columbia, and Intel.

Tell us about yourself

Being a great hairstylist is truly one of my life's passions, along with being a fitness instructor. I have been a hairstylist for over 20 years and absolutely love to help everybody look and feel good. I did my hairstylist training in Australia from a gentleman whose hairstyling skills were world recognized. He was involved in Miss Universe pageants. Early in my career, I was selected to do demonstrations at the Melbourne Exhibition EXPO for Health Beauty and Lifestyle. Now my husband and I are in Oregon and looking forward to enjoying this beautiful place. My passion, energy, and friendly style have my clients looking forward to their appointment every time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have always wanted to run my own business and be a woman entrepreneur. I was working in my salon and approached the salon owner with an offer to purchase the salon lock, stock, and barrel. We made a deal, and my dream of being a business owner and my own boss came true. I have grown my business every year since I bought it, even breaking during the first year of the COVID pandemic where the State shut down all salons for three months. My salon was awarded Top Ten Salon in 2019.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Ever since the COVID Pandemic, finding employees has been as difficult for my salon as it has for many other businesses. Stylists just seem not to be working now, and I often wonder what they are doing now. I hope they will not miss applying their art to make people look and feel great.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would recommend that anyone wanting to start and run a business to dream big, do not be afraid to try anything, and find a great business person to get advice and help. It takes a great team to put a business together.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I always strive to help people I meet and find that they always believe and trust in me and my skills. I love to make a difference in people's lives, whether for their outer appearance or their overall physical health, as I am a licensed fitness instructor as well. I always want my client to be looking and feeling their best! My biggest source of pride is when I see a smile on someone's face after I have helped with them with a transformation. I'm not only a great hairstylist, but I believe that I touch people's lives. That for me, is a job well done!
