Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rich Sievewright, founder of Richlife Fitness, located in Whistler, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Richlife is the biggest and best mobile Bootcamp business in Whistler. In a town built for tourists with cash for days, this small business is solely for the locals who make this town tick, who sacrifice to be mountain people. This business is for Whistlerites; it's to get them strong and fit for the mountains, to bring a sense of belonging, togetherness, and community.

Tell us about yourself

I found my purpose ten years ago. I began fitness coaching to simply help my community, to make people feel good and become better versions of themselves. I found a talent for group fitness and making people live out of their comfort zone. I bring many elements together like a conductor to make fitness class art. The energy, the electronic music, the movements, the varied workouts, the setting, and the coaching all make each class more than just fitness, a fitness experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Opening. Taking the plunge, investing big with no money in my back pocket. Trusting that I had created a unique and sustainable business model. The self-confidence that I was good at my job and that people would follow me. Also, surviving the pandemic through multiple closures and restrictions.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding balance. For me, it's not getting caught in the trap of growing the business, working harder and longer hours. Bigger is not always better. Company is fulfilling, it is important for my community and me, but family, friends, and fun come first.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself.
  2. Keep staff to a minimum.
  3. Build relationships and never burn bridges.
