Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kaylei Ibarra, Owner of Rhythm and Release LLC, located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a cycle, strength, and mental wellness studio. Our customers are members of the community who are looking to gain more than physical fitness in their lives. Anyone who is beginning or continuing their journey is welcome to join us. We pride ourselves on being an entirely rhythm-based studio, as musicality is an outlet for many of our members and instructors. Our customers know that when they come to rhythm | release, they are in a space that embraces diversity and inclusion as a black, women, and gay-owned business.

Tell us about yourself

My partner Brian and I first started working on the business as fitness professionals. We both taught cycling; additionally, I teach HIIT, strength and offer personal training. It was through those different modalities that we realized how much representation was lacking in our industries and also how important it was to provide a platform for diversity. Each day we are motivated by the fact that the community we are building has grown into a reputation that leads to our members leaving our classes and pop-ups throughout the city of Miami fulfilled and capable of anything.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment as business owners this far has to just be the fact that we are business owners. It may sound cliche, but overcoming the obstacles of imposter syndrome and building to the point of affirmation in what we have been able to accomplish this far and how much further we have planned to take it. When the name rhythm | release is mentioned, we are already being recognized.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes from being a business owner is not having all of the answers. When you are someone who is lucky to be put in the position we have been able to situate ourselves in, we find that a lot of the answers to moving forward in business and life as coaches are trial and error. For first-time business owners, there have been a lot of errors!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your "why" well beyond knowing your market. Know why you want this business, what purpose it will serve, who it will serve, and the message you hope people will take with it.
  2. Keep it simple, don't overcomplicate and overthink things; most mistakes can be corrected.
  3. Ask for help; if you don't know something, don't be afraid to ask someone who does.
