Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cemal K. Cemal, owner of Phillo Limited, a RHS award-winning florist located in London, UK.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey to where you are today.

I was fascinated with plants and animals from an early age. To my art tutor's horror, I dropped art and took up sciences at school - I loved biology. My first degree was in human genetics at UCL in London. I then completed a master's degree in human molecular genetics, and a Ph.D. in neurogenetics, graduating from Imperial College. Art was still a passion, as was medicine. I got to a point in my career where I felt that I still had the energy and creativity to launch my own company. Phillo was born in 2003, and 18 years later, I still love what I do. I also loved medicine, but there is only so much you can squeeze into a lifetime.

Describe your floristry business to us. What makes you stand out? Who are your customers?

Phillo is a very balanced florist - our clients include local residents, corporate companies, and Royals from all over the world when they are in London. We provide flowers for film, TV, and launched for various cosmetics brands. We dress houses, and we create magical flower displays that make people happy. We use the best available flowers and plants. We are incredibly meticulous, providing an unrivaled service because we really care about every client, project, and challenge that comes our way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To be recognized in the industry as being good because in floristry good is the highest achievement.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hours we work during peak periods, and we have our fair share in floristry.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be passionate. Work hard. Enjoy it.

What are the tactics you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance?

I am very kind to my staff. We organize group outings and travel together as much as we can - it's not all about my business, it's also about them.
