Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kevin Wessels, Founder of RevSherpas, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

RevSherpas is a Houston-based management consulting firm providing revenue growth acceleration strategy, project management, and business process outsourcing services. We help emerging small business owners and B2B service providers find and convert more premium, long-term clients with less effort and more consistency using our proprietary Client Connect!™ formula.

Tell us about yourself

With over 25+ years of business development, financial planning and analysis, CRM consulting, and executive coaching experience, I've advised some of the fastest growing digital agencies, IT service providers, private security companies, financial institutions, and startups across the globe. Our consulting practice provides entrepreneurs with innovative insights, strategies, and frameworks that are usually only reserved for large global enterprises and delivered by higher-end (and high-costing) consulting firms. Since we are a boutique, our client family members work directly and closely with me and benefit from a personalized level of attention and service. Plus, they receive fast-track results at a fraction of the price of larger consulting firms. For instance, one client recently proudly texted me that his agency had doubled its revenues in under 90 days. That was great news to receive, and the fact that I can make such a lasting impact in such a short amount of time for my clients is what drives me!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is consistently helping my clients transform from industry laggards to industry leaders and empowering them to Exponentially Outperform in any Economy™. Over the course of my life and career, I've lived in 13 different locations, studied in Madrid, and led large-scale, multi-year, multi-workstream strategic global initiatives, so it is very fulfilling when I can advise my clients, particularly the early-stage entrepreneurs, on how to expand their brand presence not just nationwide, but also internationally.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Running a business, especially in a down market, is not easy. That's why having an independent, objective business growth advisor by your side to help you stay on track, focus on the revenue-generating activities, avoid the "commercial clutter," and navigate the inevitable turbulence is so crucial. One of the hardest things I struggled with early on as a business owner, as many others do as well, is that progress is better than perfection. It can be easy to fall victim to "analysis paralysis" or working on multiple iterations of a product before you're comfortable launching it. Yes, you should strive for excellence in all phases of your operations, but you don't have to be perfect in everything to expand your market share. The reality is that regardless of how perfect you think your new product, marketing campaign, sales approach, or book is, it can always be refined and improved. Thus, aim for progress over perfection and adjust quickly to the market's feedback to succeed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start promoting your new business and focusing on client acquisition well before you have your infrastructure and initial product or service in place.
  2. Master sales and copywriting - whether you like it or not, you should always be selling, and you can do so in a non-slimy way.
  3. Don't hide behind your computer - leveraging tech to streamline and automate is essential, but growing a business is all about building relationships, and that requires using the phone and meeting people face-to-face and not relying solely on social media or instant messages.
