Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karla J. Noland, Founder of Reveal Heal Thrive LLC., located in Durham, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Reveal Heal Thrive Personal Development Coaching and Imprint is all about healing after life’s storms and stepping into the life you desire. This is a safe space for women who have come out of traumatic situations such as a loss of a loved one, domestic violence, divorce, childhood trauma, and other mental health crises. My mission is to help trauma survivors discover their true selves, visualize the life they want after surviving a traumatic experience, and create actionable steps to achieve their goals.

As a Certified Personal Development & Executive coach, I understand why only 20% of people achieve their true potential. I help trauma survivors who seek relief from anxiety and fear, which prevents them from moving forward in making bold decisions to prioritize themselves and live out their dreams. Rather than coach the symptoms, I leverage my Mental Fitness training in Positive Intelligence® so that I can work with them on the root causes that sabotage their desired outcomes.

My goal as your Self-Discovery coach is to help fill the gap between where you are now to where you want to be on the other side of healing!

Tell us about yourself

I am a wife, working mom, award-winning author & speaker, and trauma-informed certified Self-Discovery coach who loves sharing what I have learned. I currently live in Durham, NC, with my family.

In October 2020, I established Reveal Heal Thrive LLC after the untimely passing of my mother. I spent much of my life holding on to pain, trauma, and anger, and as part of my healing process, I recognized I was merely surviving in life but was not thriving. I wanted to live a more purposeful life and let go of any attachments that no longer served me. Over time, I turned my adversity into opportunity, and thus Reveal Heal Thrive LLC was born.

I’m known for being vulnerable in sharing my personal stories of triumph and what may appear to be labeled as a failure by society, but I have come to realize a failure is an event, not a person.

My motivation comes from the belief that overcoming trials and tribulations has made you resilient and made it possible for you to manifest your purpose through your pain. Maybe you’ve lived in survival mode and believed the lies you’ve told yourself. You’ve held onto the false narrative that it’s too late, you don’t have what it takes, or you’re selfish to pursue your dreams. I’ve been there. I put everyone else ahead of me and forgot who I was until I got help. If this is your struggle, I can help!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is becoming the 2022 Eric Hoffer Spiritual Book Award Winner for my debut book, The Day My Heart Turned Blue: Healing After the Loss of My Mother.

The Day My Heart Turned Blue tells the story of how I found the strength to turn my pain into purpose after losing my mother. I hope that readers will walk away encouraged and give themselves permission to discover their own strength and walk in it. The Day My Heart Turned Blue book and Bereavement Companion Journal are available worldwide everywhere books are sold!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is letting go of the false belief that you have to accomplish everything now! At the beginning of my coaching practice, I wanted to reach every goal I placed in front of me within the next 6-12 months. However, to build a sustainable business, I learned things take time.

I now live by the mantra, “You can’t plant the seed and eat the fruit on the same day.” This mantra helps me set my expectations when establishing a vision and setting goals. The mantra stems from a quote from award-winning author, speaker, and coach Fabienne Fredrickson, and it reminds me that if we are not careful, we can get so focused on the destination that we are overlooking the growth and lessons learned from the journey.

Seeds need to be nurtured, watered and receive adequate sunshine for optimal growth to bear fruit. By living out this mantra, I can take it easy on myself and give myself more self-compassion by taking steps one day at a time to work toward my goal.”

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand your “Why”! Your “Why” is a statement of purpose describing why you do the work you do. Understanding your “Why” helps you to establish the vision for your business in how you see yourself as a business owner and how you envision how your clients feel after an interaction with you. Understanding your “Why” will also motivate you to keep going despite any obstacles you may face.
  2. Narrow down your niche: find and engage your tribe so that you can attract those who need you the most. It’s endearing to want to help everyone, but what separates you from everyone else in your field? Ask yourself, “What value do you drive that your niche or tribe needs, and where can you find them?”
  3. Ask for help! None of us have life all figured out. Do you find yourself stuck or need more knowledge in an area of your business? Ask yourself, what gaps in training or experience do you need to fill? Engage in a business and/or money mindset coach to help you grow and sustain your business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I get asked, how do I know if I'm ready for coaching vs. therapy?

Rule of Thumb: If your past is an issue, counseling is your best option. If your past is simply a fact (regardless of whether the circumstances were difficult or negative), you are probably ready for coaching.

My role as a Self-Discovery Coach is to:

  • Discover, clarify and align with what the client wants to achieve
  • Encourage client self-discovery
  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
  • Hold the client responsible and accountable

What Self-Discovery Coaching isn't:

  • Therapy
  • Consulting
  • Mentoring
  • Training
  • Athletic Development

If there is an issue for which you may need counseling, I will suggest it. With the support of a counselor or therapist, some individuals choose to engage in coaching and counseling simultaneously, but with a focus on different areas of life for each service.
