Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown, CEO of Restful Sleep MD, located in Ambler, PA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
In my business RestfulSleepMD, I help busy professional women prioritize sleep so they can go from being drained and exhausted to thriving in their families, career, and relationships.
Tell us about yourself
As a physician, I burned the candle at both ends during training and became burnt out very quickly. I was profoundly sleep deprived and wore my sleep deprivation as a badge of honor and a reflection of my commitment to the field. I realized I was hurting myself and was at risk of hurting others due to my constant fatigue. Combined with this, I had kids during my training, and balancing my family and career left sleep in constant short supply. I had a pivotal moment that completely changed my relationship with sleep, and with the transformation I experienced, I was motivated to pursue training in sleep medicine. I started my company RestfulSleepMD to help women like me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been more of the mindset shift that has enabled me to see my dream and purpose as much needed. This motivates me to go on and empower women about the importance of sleep in their personal, mental, and emotional well-being.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being a business owner is hard work. Consistently putting myself out there as someone who would rather be in the background is challenging. What keeps me going is realizing how much people hold themselves back when they are sleep deprived and how critical this work is in shedding light on a very neglected tool.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Define who you help and the outcome you help them achieve. Let this be your north star.
- Don't wait till it's perfect before you get started. Your message is good enough; you can always iterate.
- Leverage the power of community. Find people doing similar work as you and learn from them.
