What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Resin Obsession. We sell epoxy resin supplies to crafters and artists of all skill levels.

Tell us about yourself

I started as a metal jewelry artist, then switched to resin in 2007. In 2011, the artist who founded Resin Obsession was looking to sell the business. Not only did I buy the business, but I have pushed it to a 500% growth in sales. I'm motivated by how I felt as a beginning resin artist. I was lost, confused, and made ugly, sticky messes with epoxy resin. When I had the opportunity to take over Resin Obsession, I saw I could help other artists going through the same challenges. Since then, we've helped thousands of artists worldwide make something beautiful with resin.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Turning a fledgling business from a side project into something that can support my family and me. I've built an asset with a value that I hope to sell one day.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

People are hard. Whether it's customers, vendors, or employees, there are strategies I've had to learn about working effectively with different people. I really like the Enneagram teachings, as they've helped me understand my style better and how I impact the people I work with. Plus, I've gotten insight into others and what motivates them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Bootstrap. Bootstrap. Bootstrap. To this day, I love spending money...when I know it's going to make me money. Investing in a software system that will help you do a better job maintaining inventory is one thing. But paying a premium to rent an office space because it's 'shiny and new' is not a priority.
