Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Ballard, Founder & CEO of Resiliency for Life Ltd., located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business helps people develop the skills and mindset to be better prepared for life's upsets and setbacks. Accidents, incidents, health, relationship issues, being fired, going broke, we all have times in our personal, family, or job that turn our world upside down. We teach and train how to have a better quality experience and often a better quality outcome. We work with organizations and associations of all sizes. Government, business, health, education, community, not-for-profits, and individuals and families.
Tell us about yourself
I got interested in resiliency after a 7-year threat from two bouts of cancer and three brushes with death. Plus, I learned about the research that helps me manage two chronic illnesses for fewer symptoms and less intensity/frequency. Plus saves up to 30% to manage them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've been pleased to have a few. I have had my materials licensed and used by a foreign government, by a major IT firm for 10,000 of their staff and spouses, and by a grandparents group parenting their grandchildren.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Managing priorities so that work-life balance does not get out of focus.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get a mentor in the area you are least comfortable in.
- Never stop learning formally and informally.
- Keep up to date with trends in the group you want to sell to and the groups you wish to use as allies and suppliers.
- Hire to your weaknesses.
