Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex Hey, Founder of Reset ADHD, located in Sioux Falls, SD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Reset ADHD, a service company providing coaching services to individuals who are seeking to reach their full potential but feel held back by brain-chemistry-related challenges.

Tell us about yourself

I have had ADHD my whole life, but I didn't get diagnosed until the age of 20. It was then that I started to learn more about my brain and how it operated. I had always wanted to run my own business, but when I graduated from college, I did not have any business ideas that excited me. I spent the summer doing nothing, feeling sorry for myself, and wondering what to do with my life. That summer, I got a couple of writing opportunities, and by the end of the summer, I decided to try being a writer full-time.

After a year of freelancing and making no money, I went back to school and got a master's degree in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati. By the end of that degree, I wanted to become a professor of criminology. So, I spent the next school year as a substitute teacher to get experience in a classroom while trying to get into a criminal justice doctoral program. I couldn't get into a doctoral program, so I spent another year as a substitute teacher/freelance writer. During that year, it started to weigh on me that I wasn't figuring out what I wanted to do with my life.

After some self-exploration, I determined that part of the reason I wasn't figuring out what I wanted to do with my life was that I wasn't managing my own ADHD well. This led me to dive into research and writing about ADHD. While writing about ADHD, a friend came to me, thinking he had ADHD, and asked if I could walk with him through the testing process. He ended up not getting diagnosed with ADHD, but being there for him and writing about ADHD awoke a passion in me for helping others with ADHD. I, therefore, enrolled in an ADHD coach training program and started Reset ADHD.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is when I received an email from a past client years after she concluded services with me. In the email, she told me how well she was doing and how I had helped her. It was a boon to my confidence and left me feeling great about the work I am doing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being self-directed is a huge challenge for me. It can be hard to know when to do what when you own a business. There is no boss telling you what to do every day. You have to direct yourself. Figuring out how much time to spend on emails, marketing, actually coaching my clients, and other tasks is not easy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get someone or several people by whom you can run ideas. This person might be a coach or a mentor, but they should be your cheerleader when you need it, your accountability partner when you need it, or an advisor when you need it.
  2. Outsource the work you don't want to do.
  3. DO IT! Starting a business is scary, but it is also rewarding. If you are thinking about it and have an idea you believe in, take the plunge.
