Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marion Renk-Rosenthal, Owner of Renk-Rosenthal Media Services, located in Tulsa, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a freelance, multi-lingual, and multi-cultural Jane of several trades: media and documentary producer, content creator, and project manager. My clients are American and European TV and video production companies, event production agencies, and business travel agencies that focus on incentive, reward, and business travel programs.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up and attended school in three countries and thus became multi-lingual and cultural. I have a Master's in Applied Foreign Languages, with a focus on tourism management. My first employment, by pure chance, happened to be with Radio Tele Luxembourg in Luxembourg. Over the years, my skill set in production and communications enabled me to bridge several industries and cultures successfully. I have been self-employed since I moved to the U.S. in 1986. I love what I do because no day is alike. I am always learning and growing at work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am happy to say that I have been able to form lasting bonds with my clients. Many business relationships span decades. I work hard to ensure that their projects succeed. My clients know they can trust me. I become part of their team.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part is that you have to do EVERYTHING. I am my own IT person, website designer, office manager, etc. Many tasks take up time that doesn't get paid.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set goals and work towards them.
  2. Keep learning new skills.
  3. Be patient and flexible and keep working. Not every success is achieved on a straight path.
