Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patricia Perkins, Owner of Renaissance Windows and Doors, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Custom windows and doors to homeowners, architects, building professionals, and interior designers in Houston, Austin, and the Texas Hill Country.

Tell us about yourself

My first job was in building materials. I've always been fascinated by custom work and the concept that you can build anything. I am motivated by helping people find the perfect fit for their homes. A home is a big investment. I love helping homeowners or tradesmen select windows and doors that will not only enhance the beauty of the home but perform well by being energy efficient, making the home more secure, and acting as a sound barrier.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being debt-free — not a lot of businesses can say that. Watching the business grow is very rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is nothing stays the same. It is a constant battle. No sooner than you have solved one issue, another one crops up. You are constantly juggling employees, customers, suppliers, and vendors.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Love what you do because you will eat, sleep and breathe your business.
  2. Surround yourself with a good team. You can't do everything so finding talent for the things you don't do well is key.
  3. Watch expenses. You can't always control revenue, but you can control expenses.
