Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in nutrition health for kids, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer House, founder at First Step Nutrition in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

I'm a Registered Dietitian who helps parents ensure their kids get the right nutrients so they can stop worrying their child is going to be 'hangry' or not get enough to eat.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

I started my private nutrition practice 13 years ago, after I had my first child and decided I didn't want to go back to clinical hospital work. I love the flexibility of working as a solopreneur and the variety: blogging, I've written 2 books, work with brands the media and lots of families!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm proud to have published two books. But also get a ton of satisfaction when I can help a struggling family with their picky eaters - just to relax, stop short-order cook syndrome and teach their kids to try new foods!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

I love working alone, but it's also nice to bounce ideas off of co-workers and socialize with them. I do miss that!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

1) Hire a business coach of some sort right from the start to create a plan.
2) Surround yourself with groups of entrepreneurs who support you and can relate.
3) Create a monthly, weekly and daily "to-do" lists that are achievable to keep yourself on track.

If there was one thing you could do repeatedly to help grow your business, what would it be?

Get more people in my online programs - and transform their mealtimes (and their kiddos!) for the better so they help spread the word!

What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance and to keep it all together?

I exercise and meditate most days for physical and mental strength and grounding.

Who are some of your favorite entrepreneurs and best business resources/books?

I love following other Dietitians and seeing how they run their businesses! I've joined many online programs to learn how to grow my business and always get some value from them. James Wedmore's Business By Design is a good one-stop shop for online businesses.
