Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashish Lal, Founder of RedAsh TV, located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

RedAsh TV is the knowledge partner of RedAsh Films, my 15-year-old film production company, where we make Corporate Films and Entertainment Films. RedAsh TV makes Knowledge Films in the form of transformational online video courses. One of the courses is "Heal Asthma using Yoga, Ayurveda and Nutritional Therapy." This should give you an idea of our overall business.

Tell us about yourself

I'm an engineer from India's premier institute IIT Delhi. I worked in the Data Analytics domain for 4 years but then realized that my calling in life was acting, writing, and filmmaking. In 2007, I officially founded RedAsh Films Pvt. Ltd. to make Corporate and Entertainment Films. I love filmmaking, and that motivates me to work. In 2022, we ventured with RedAsh TV to make Knowledge Films to transform people's lives through well-curated online video courses.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In less than 12 months, we created about 200 short films with fictional corporate stories to train employees of one of the topmost MNCs in India. They were basically e-learning films but in an entertaining way. This led to a jump in completions from 25% to 91% and yielded amazing results for the client. We did end-to-end work, from ideation, scripting, and shooting to editing and animation. The client was highly satisfied with our quality and adherence to timelines. Each of the 200 videos was delivered before their deadline, which the client was really proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Frankly, getting new clients is a tough job, but even tougher is getting project funding for entertainment films. Entertainment films include Bollywood films, and we have made one, but since this industry is unorganized and star-driven, it gets difficult to get film funding even for a brilliant script.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Integrity towards clients, vendors, and teammates should be of the highest priority.
  2. Eye for detail in everything you do sets you apart from 90% of your competitors.
  3. After a budget is finalized, focusing on serving the client instead of thinking of getting the money will help you in the long run.
  4. The most important thing, obviously, is to keep at it and keep adapting to new challenges. Nobody can tell you what challenges you will face.
