Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Pederson, owner of Rebels & Rogues Parlour, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Rebels & Rogues Parlour is a private, by-appointment-only hair salon nestled in the heart of Gastown, Vancouver. Over the past ten years, I have built an intimate space for clients to relax and feel beautiful. I specialize in "Beach washed" lived-in hair color, dimensional brunette balayage, and multifaceted bright blondes.

Tell us about yourself

For as long as I can remember, I had an interest in beauty and fashion, so naturally, I was drawn to expressing my creativity through makeup artistry and hairstyling. With 14 years in the industry, I’ve worked in editorial makeup, bridal styling, cosmetic retailing, production management, session styling, and TV & film. I offer my clients a vast array of knowledge in technical skills and current hair trends.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I spent five years working for one of the biggest salons in Yaletown and one day got the opportunity to take over a lease for a small space. I decided to take a chance on myself and learn how to build a business that didn't exist yet in my chosen industry. My private space lets me focus solely on my client and provide them with a bespoke hair color that enhances their individualistic beauty.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Setting boundaries with clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your worth.
  2. Stay humble and show gratitude.
  3. Work smarter, not harder.
