Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in web design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Grace, a Squarespace Expert and Website Designer, based in Welland, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Squarespace Expert and Coach. I help other Squarespace Website Designers use code on their client's websites.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business to give myself more flexibility and financial security. I love that I can set my own schedule while working on the projects I choose.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My immediate response is to think financially or about the number of clients, etc. However, I have been working on redefining my definition of success. Honestly, my biggest goal was to have a proper work-life balance, and I have managed to achieve that this year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Mindset. It is so hard to remove yourself emotionally from business decisions. This year I have been working on my mindset a lot. I didn't realize how much your mindset filters into every decision you make.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with market research. It is not enough to just pick a business or service that you like. You need to do the research to know who you want to serve, what problems they have, and how you can solve them. Then design your business around that.
  2. Mindset. You cannot have a healthy, growing business if you are not mentally healthy and willing to grow. Read books, listen to podcasts, talk to a therapist, whatever you need to do to grow continually. Every decision you make in your business is affected by your mindset. Price, worth, marketing, etc., are all based on how you value yourself and your business and how you communicate that value.
  3. Metrics. Track everything you can. Not only is it nice to look back and see how you've grown, but every decision you make in your business should be based on data.
