Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joseph Bershad, Founder of Re-Root Functional Nutrition Coaching, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Re-Root Functional Nutrition Coaching, I know that you want to be engaged with life with the energy you had in your 20s and 30s. In order to do that, you need to fix your symptoms. Whether it is bloating, gas, low energy, or lack of focus, the symptoms are keeping you at home and worn out. You are isolated, exhausted at work, and missing out on life with family and friends. The problem is that there are so many options, and most don't work. Even the ones that seem to work are just too hard to maintain. You've tried it all. The solutions out there just leave you feeling overwhelmed, confused, frustrated, and more than a little skeptical that anything can make a long-term difference. You want to have the energy of your 20's and 30's back. I believe that you shouldn't have to watch life from the outside. You should be right in the middle and engaged with your life, your family, friends, hobbies, and even your work. I understand the challenge and don't want to just help you find a Band-Aid fix. I want to help you get to the root of the symptoms, which is why I've created the Re-Root Wellness/Functional Nutrition Program.

Together we find the right plan that works for you and your life.
Here's how we do it:

  1. Book a Discovery Call.
  2. Learn and implement simple nutrition and lifestyle changes.
  3. Get back to feeling energetic and involved in life.

Schedule your discovery call today so that we can find the right fit for you. And in the meantime, take my quiz to discover how you can optimize your health beginning today. The goal at Re-Root is for you to stop missing out on life's events and instead get out with friends and family to enjoy a bike ride, dinner around the table, or a relaxing evening around the fire pit.

Tell us about yourself

My passion began during my own personal health journey, where I felt "off" and couldn't figure out what was going on. It was a long journey, but eventually, I was able to figure out the "why" or root cause of my health issues with the help of some amazing functional medicine practitioners. I was able to learn the power of the food as medicine approach, where when you understand what foods are best for you along with the right lifestyle practices, your body can heal and thrive again. In the end, I was able to lose 30 pounds (and keep it off), fixed my digestive issues, regained my mental clarity, and was able to re-engage with life.

It was after this journey that I decided to combine my career path as a biologist, professional chef, and product developer and trained to become a functional nutrition coach to be able to help others. It's now become my passion to help others re-engage with life again and help them regain their ability to truly get out here and enjoy life again. This is all the motivation that I need, as seeing others get better is the most rewarding thing that I can ask for.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest win has been working with clients who have implemented and practiced my functional nutrition and lifestyle program and have seen the rewards pay off when they have been able to stop taking their blood pressure or diabetes drugs under their primary care doctor. This truly validates the power of food as medicine, where they were able to reduce and manage their chronic inflammation and allowed their bodies to perform as nature intended them to.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a sole proprietor, I have to wear many hats to succeed. Such as managing my marketing, social media, finances, scheduling, & running coaching sessions. Each has its own hurdles, but I've learned so much since I started my business in November 2021, to where I truly enjoy getting up each and every day and figuring out how to do these tasks more effectively and efficiently to be able to move my business forward.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research your market before starting (i.e., talk with other practitioners in your field and prospective clients) to understand that your services are truly needed and how your services can be differentiated from others in your area.
  2. Maintain a personal connection with your clients. In today's digital world, it's become so impersonal, and when we can genuinely connect with our clients, you can see how excited they become, and ideally, they can help to self-promote your business.
  3. Learn to be flexible as your business will have its up and downs, and you'll need to figure out what's the most important thing to tackle today to be able to move ahead.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being an entrepreneur can be challenging at times, but if you continue to learn from your experiences, it can be so rewarding as you know that you are helping your clients grow themselves and be better for what you've taught them.
