Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alan Wood, partner and co-founder of Rally Beer Company, located in The Blue Mountains, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We brew functional beers to inspire adventure & balance! All of our beers are functional and/or non-alcoholic to be the perfect companion to your next adventure. Our flagship beer is the first beer in Canada to be rich in electrolytes, and we recently launched our electrolyte-rich non-alcoholic beer to round out our portfolio & solidify our commitment to the better-for-you category.

Tell us about yourself

I was riding the Butter Tart 700 - a 760km off-road bike journey that I was attempting to complete solo in 4 days back in 2019. I was learning about nutrition and fuelling my journey with all kinds of bars/gels/electrolyte tablets and I started thinking about whether I could brew beer with some of the new ingredients I was learning about.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Watching other people enjoy our beers in the backcountry wilderness and tagging us on social!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The daily grind - there are obstacles everyday that make it tough to be in this industry as a small independent player. From sourcing cans to ingredients there has been countless challenges behind the scenes!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Just start!

2. Find something you are passionate about.

3. Surround yourself with good people.
