Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Denise Rogers, Designer at Rachise Designs, located in Dacula, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a metalsmith & love setting natural stone with copper, sterling silver & brass. I also work with other types of materials to create a variety of styles. My customers are people who want a stunning piece of jewelry that is one of a kind. Pieces that represent their unique style, not the cookie-cutter pieces you usually see everywhere.

Tell us about yourself

In 2008, I worked in investment banking. I was laid off. I wanted to do something I was passionate about, so I knew I couldn't go back to sitting at a desk working 9-5. One afternoon, I happened to be driving past a little shop that offered jewelry-making classes. I took one class, and I've been hooked ever since. I have taken many classes from various jewelry-making organizations to get where I am today. My motivation comes from still being in love with the process of manipulating metals. When you look at a stone and create a frame for it, others see your work, and they fall in love with it, also. Well, there's nothing better than that feeling!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Recently, I have started mentoring young entrepreneur women interested in starting a side hustle or with hopes of turning a passion into a full-time income. I spent my first few years just trying to figure it all out on my own. I wasted a lot of resources and time because there just weren't the tools we have today. So, I want these young women to use their resources and time efficiently and effectively so that they can find their path much more quickly than I did.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balancing work and family time. At the beginning of my journey, the maker's platform was a whole different place. Now it is essential to be or have a content creator. This means I have to take time to focus not just on my product but also on my brand. I often have a hard time finding the balance. As a wife, I want to spend quality time with my husband. And as an artist, I want to spend my time creating beautiful pieces of art. Something must always be sacrificed. Having s supportive husband has truly made all the difference for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take your time and do your research. You will thank yourself later.
  2. Ask for help. Don't go it alone. Others have already paved the way- seek them out!
  3. Don't give up! Write down why you started to keep yourself motivated when times are tough.
