Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in accessories but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Reichenbach, Owner of Rainylune, located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I like to describe my business by saying that I draw frogs who like to commit crimes 🐸πŸ”ͺ. It sounds silly, but it's what I do! I'm an artist who creates frog-themed merchandise based on my cute and chaotic frog characters, and I sell those products in my online store, Rainylune! My biggest customer base is women in their early twenties. A lot of people seem surprised by this - since I make very cutesy things like plushies, they assume only kids would like that stuff, but that isn't the case!

Tell us about yourself

I started my froggy business as a college student after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a condition that causes chronic pain. It made it so painful that I couldn't even hold a pen to draw. Determined to make art anyways, I found a way to use my mouse to create very simple frog drawings and posted them online. As my following continued to grow, I began selling merchandise of my creations, which eventually led to where I am today!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far has been getting to work with Hot Topic! I used to love going to that store growing up; it's wild to think that now I can find my own artwork there!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Juggling every single aspect of the business. You're not just the owner; you're also the artist, packing designer, customer service, supply chain management, accountant, and the list goes on. And on the flip side, trying to let go of control and outsource some tasks can also be very difficult to do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Use social media not just to promote your business but create connections. Make friends with other business owners, and interact with customers and fans regularly!
  2. You don't have to do everything yourself. I know it can be hard to let go of control, but sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself and your company is to learn how to outsource and delegate.
  3. Get someone who isn't you to handle customer service as soon as you can. Sometimes, people get mean. When your business is your baby, it's hard not to feel like every rude customer is attacking you personally. Remember to take a deep breath or a break before responding!
