Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Paling, Founder of Efficient Language Coaching Global SL, located in La Selva del Camp, Tarragona, Spain.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

In 2008 I founded Efficient Language Coaching. Prior to that, I had been working for some years as a freelance language coach. I really wanted to expand and develop, so it was essential to create a corporate vehicle to facilitate growth.

Now, there are various strands to the business. In the first strand, Efficient language coaching global is a training organization that trains language teachers to become Neurolanguage Coaches and NeuroHeart Education Coach courses for teachers of any discipline. In the second strand, ELC offers Neurolanguage Coaching to private individuals and professionals who wish to learn, enhance or improve a language. We have created a network of Neurolanguage coaches worldwide and must say that these coaches are phenomenal and are achieving amazing results with their learners. Thirdly we also run our global conferences and the final strand we have just constituted, the Neuroheart Educational Foundation.

Tell us about yourself

It's always difficult to know where to begin. Perhaps I could start by saying that although I was born in the UK, I definitely feel European as I have lived in various European countries and am extremely grateful that those experiences gave me the gift of speaking languages. We all know the famous quote from Steve jobs about "looking back over your life and being able to connect the dots," and that's exactly how I feel at this point in my life. I can honestly say that everything I've done has contributed to where I am today. I'm a polyglot, a neuro language coach, a trainer, an entrepreneur, and a lawyer, with an MA in human rights, another in applied neuroscience, and an ICF PCC Credentialed Life Coach.

The passion, vision, and drive to change education through the transformation of teachers keep my motors constantly revving, and seeing how those teachers that become neuro language or neuroheart coaches get amazing feedback and results from their learners is absolutely the heartfelt evidence that teachers have the power to create this change.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment, I think, was wading through and past all the naysayers, the sceptics, the critics who, in those first years, loudly voiced their judgments and opinions, and now having an amazing community of over 1300 neuro language coaches worldwide warms my heart and makes me feel the blood sweat and tears over those first years were worth every second!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping the brain focused and learning how to manage "self" is probably the greatest lesson to learn.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be spontaneous.
  2. Be flexible.
  3. Be consistent.
