Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rocio Garcia-Colmenero, Founder of R. Mayte Creates, located in New Palestine, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a passionate and dedicated Latina graphic designer, Tech Virtual Assistant, and Podcast Host with a keen eye for detail and a love for creativity. With years of experience in the industry, I've learned that design should be both beautiful and functional, and I strive to create visually striking and effective designs that communicate a clear message that resonates with audiences.  My skills include graphic design, streamline integration, illustration, logo design, website design, and social media content creation. I help businesses show up authentically online.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a resourceful creative that utilizes her online skills to tell stories in an authentic way!  Helping others show up creatively online while also advocating, empowering, and nurturing other women is what fuels me to be better while showing my children the importance of being a good human. Showing my children that our God-given gifts can make an impact in the world around them. When I'm not working on design projects, you can find me being a momma with my 3 littles. I also love exploring new creative outlets, whether it's photography, painting, or finding new ways to express myself creatively. I'm also an avid traveler, and I love to incorporate my experiences and the local cultures into my work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Launching Somos Visionaries Podcast because it promotes empowerment for Latinas who feel stuck and want to elevate their lives. On the podcast we host authentic conversations with brave Latinas who are choosing CAMBIO over comfort and helping them find a safe community of women.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Comparison and work-life balance. It's easy to look at other business owners and judge yourself. Don't do it though; your journey is YOUR journey. Resting and setting boundaries around your personal life as an entrepreneur can be challenging because it's hard to say no to clients. But if you don't learn to pause, rest and recharge, the burnout will come very soon.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set boundaries with yourself and others. Ex: Set your business hours and stick to them! Don't share your personal cell phone number unless you absolutely need to. Get a Google line so that you can designate clients that way. Boundaries will make you or break you.
  2. Get help! Don't think you can do it all on your own; even though you can doesn't mean you should. When you think of successful business owners they have teams. Delegate tasks and once you're able focus your energy on doing what you're passionate about that's when you'll really thrive.
  3. Stay organized - Make sure you know where everything is. If you're a service based business owner use a CRM system like HoneyBook to keep clients in the loop and look top notch. When the end of the year comes, you'll want everything easily accessible and in one place.
