What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is to make management simple. My clients are small business owners who, more often than not, practice the craft of their business. Now, as business owners, they are both practitioners and bosses, responsible both for the work itself and the business overall. I offer management consulting, which is the practice of business performance improvement, to build an operational plan and work standards that make managing the business simple. My clients get to spend their time on the work they like the most and know their business is easy to run and manage with the systems we put in place.
Tell us about yourself
I never thought of myself as a business owner because I never thought of myself as creating a new product or service. I spent 12 years running a small business, and over that time, I realized that I had, in fact, created something new: a management system. It was a system that allowed us to adapt quickly, grow more easily, and communicate well. Most small business owners are creators, visionaries, and big idea people. My work complements those skills, and I realized there was a market for this "product."
The small businesses I work with keep me entertained and encouraged every single day. Seeing business owners who care deeply about the quality of their work and the environment they create for their employees fills me with admiration. I like to work with people who know their name is on the door and care about the reputation that goes with that.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Providing practical advice. I am in the business of ideas, and I strive to make those concrete actions that my clients can take. Transforming my clients' lives with specific, actionable plans is what I set out to do each time, and all my work is driving toward that outcome.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It is lonely at the top. Making decisions, handling the pressure, and even just brainstorming ideas can get difficult when you are the ultimate decision-maker, especially if you come from a more corporate environment with deeper specialization and bigger committees. It can get both lonely and overwhelming. (But not impossible!)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Know your fundamentals: everything else you can experiment with and change.
- How do you want clients to talk about you, and what can you do to build that reputation?
- Have your product pass the "so what test": what is particular about your way of doing things?
- Don't do it alone; get specialists, employees, and experts to work with you on what you need.
