Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Faye Ziegeweid, Owner of Queen Fayzel, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Queen Fayzel illustrates and designs heartfelt, sassy paper goods for humans who crave connection, so they can show up easily and authentically for the people in their life. I design Queen Fayzel products to help people make and maintain connections with each other and be present for important moments in people's lives.

Tell us about yourself

I started Queen Fayzel as a way to help people authentically express themselves, so they can share how they feel with the people in their lives and build relationships that are important to them. For me, sending greeting cards to people is a way to safely share how I feel and, at the same time, give someone a tangible representation of those feelings. And, let's be honest, when were you ever disappointed to get a heartfelt, handwritten note in the mail?

I'm motivated each day to express myself through my illustration and design and to help people create meaningful connections and say what they feel without platitudes or pretense.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting out of my own way and starting the business! I thought about it for nearly six years before I actually took steps to make Queen Fayzel a reality.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Speaking as the owner of a creative business, it can be really hard when the product you sell is your personal artistic creation. It takes a lot of confidence to put your work out there. One of the other hard things that comes with being a solopreneur is that, ultimately, you are responsible for every aspect of your business. That's freeing and, at times, terribly daunting.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a community of fellow business owners to learn from, lean on, grow with, and support. It makes a huge difference.
  2. Don't fall into overthinking or research spirals — just try things. They won't all work, but you'll learn so much more from trying than you will from thinking or researching.
  3. Invest in your learning and professional development. It's tempting to put everything back into the business, but you've got to learn and grow in order to grow your business.
