Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jordan Barrick, CEO of Quality Home, located in Mesquite, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

You know how when you go shopping for furniture, there are often pushy and potentially sweaty salespeople there to make you uncomfortable? We exist to change that. We are a full-line home furnishings retailer serving awesome clients in North Texas.

Tell us about yourself

I joined the company in 2011 and stepped into executive leadership in 2014. Prior to joining, I was working a job without a clear vision or plan for my life. I realized my industry (video game resales) was headed toward becoming obsolete. When given the opportunity to switch industries and tackle a multifaceted business challenge, I jumped on it.

I am motivated by my faith which commands a higher standard than any leader could. I'm also tenacious about taking our company to the next level. I want to create a company that is built to last, serves the market better than anyone else, and keeps its soul in the process. Plus, I want to lead well and expand my abilities. Our people are amazing, and I love working with our team members.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We've built a culture and navigated growth without losing sight of our mission. We renovated a movie theater into our new flagship store, which was a mess and a half, and came through the pandemic stronger than ever. I also went back to school and finished my degree while working in the business I lead now.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Leadership can be lonely, and conflict is unavoidable. Oftentimes it feels like you are spread too thin, and the imposter syndrome runs rampant through your head. Finally, the tools that helped you start the business and get to a certain level are typically not the same ones you need to advance to the following level.

Change is inevitable. Growth is optional - John Maxwell.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Read or Listen to every book you can get your hands on.
  2. Evaluate who you spend your time around.
  3. Tell the truth and be a person of integrity. Help others, and you'll have a long list of people you can ask for advice.
  4. If you don't know something, don't pretend! The smartest people are honest about their lack of knowledge on a subject and get ahead.
  5. Budget and start slow. Fail in a way that you don't bankrupt yourself or your other ideas! You need them!
  6. We are changed by the knowledge we gain and who we hang around with.
