Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Moncayo, Founder of Qonscious Fit, LLC, located in Dunwoody, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I created the wellness concept: Move-Nourish-Mind® as a platform from which to share more than 20 years of Holistic Fitness & Mindfulness education and practice. I customize 'One on One' programs for adults, tweens, and teens. Leveraging expertise in stress management, functional exercise, anatomy, alignment, and Neuroscience-based Mind/Emotional Balancing, I develop customized programs for each client's individual needs and preferences. Client-specific programs include a blend of Functional Exercise and/or Yoga, Nutrition, and/or Heart-Mind Balancing Training.

Tell us about yourself

Back in 2012, when I left corporate to start my own business, I was led by a vision and burning desire to share a unique formula for improved vitality and health that I had developed and cultivated on myself with huge success. At the time, the formula was different from anything available to the public, especially in the Atlanta market. The formula, named: Move-Nourish-Mind® raised awareness of the need for a holistic approach to wellness, including elements of exercise, nutrition, and mindfulness, as they are all interdependent. At the time, people already understood the importance of exercise and nutrition, but they didn't see Mindfulness as part of the equation. I was driven by the challenge to help people see that even if they were exercising and eating well, they would not feel, look or perform as they wanted to until they addressed their emotional state. On the flip side, I was also driven to become a thought leader for those meditators who weren't addressing their movement or nutrition, thus neglecting a great part of the whole.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm especially proud of the evidence I've received from clients who are experiencing the value of our engagement. For example, the corporate leader from Halyard Health, whose blood pressure numbers have improved in tandem with improved relationships with staff and a greater sense of calm during stressful times, and the corporate leader from Clorox, who now manages migraines with meditation instead of medication, while receiving a long-awaited for promotion and improving relationship with his direct reports. I'm also super proud of my recently published online self-study Mindfulness program: Mind Muscle Training (link: https://qonscious-fit-school.teachable.com/p/Mind-Muscle-Training)

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think it's challenging at times for business owners to prioritize their passion/the reason they got into the business, to begin with, and never compromise themselves, whether to please a client's whims or for financial "opportunity." Sometimes you need to say "no" and stay on task and on target. You are not competing with anyone... you are building something that will, in turn, "build" you. Patience is the word. :-)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust yourself and recognize your self-worth (this takes time... much easier said than done, so be patient with yourself).
  2. There's a fine line between humility and lack of self-confidence. It took me time, but the more I researched and learned about what others in my field were doing, the more I realized the value of my work and what I have to offer. If you're starting a business, do your research early on so that you can stand on firm ground and understand your worth.
  3. Work to develop strong partnerships and collaborations... so that you can feel comfortable asking for the help and referrals that will bring you success.
